This is something the FPCAV needs to consider. Also, we need to send them
our financial report.

Subject: [paganpride-coords] affiliate events?
As can be expected, an issue has arisen that we didn't quite expect
(actually, we kind of did, but we punted on it, and here it is in the 90
yard return coming at us full speed). And it is more widespread than I
originally thought.
The issue is: many events are 100% sponsored by another nonprofit, and
they want to "piggyback" off that nonprofit instead of getting and EIN.
Many of the events have been doing so already for years.
This could have caused a financial issue in the past, which is why we
kind of discouraged it (and money should have never been commingled).
But we'll put that aside and hope it doesn't bite us in the ass.
Here is what is going to happen now:
The PPP Board hasn't decided this yet but they are discussing it now.
And we will decide soon. So if you think you are one of these events
that wants to piggy back off your local "Anytown, USA Pagans United for
Cool Witchery" or whatever they happen to be called, hold off on the GEN
instructions. However, be prepared to move forward with the GEN
instructions in case we decide it might be better to do so.
If we do decide to move ahead with this new class of "affiliate", we are
STILL going to decide, case by case, whether you qualify. And since
some people broke the rule :-), I will say again: EMAIL ME AND YOUR RC.
Please. Not your regional list (I am not on them all, even though I
probably should be, so I haven't even seen some of these yet).
While you wait, think about whether you really want to do this. The GEN
instructions are pretty easy, I think (if you disagree, maybe you have a
suggestion for me to make them more straightforward?). But piggybacking
off another event can sometimes lead to conflicts about commingled
funds, or going outside the charitable purpose of the main group, or
divergent goals.
In fact, I can already tell you that if you are piggybacking off a CUUPS
group, we are probably going to ask you to get a different EIN. CUUPS
is great, and of course our organization shares senior officers with
theirs. I have nothing bad to say about them. This is purely a legal
issue: CUUPS's charitable purpose doesn't quite line up with ours, from
an IRS/legal standpoint (CUUPS are more like churches, and we are not a
church). Also, there are some CUUPS chapters that would rather not be
associated with Pagan Pride events, at least not directly associated
with them (again, this goes back to their own vision of their charitable
purpose). That is a political issue I'd rather not try to face.
